Study day: Accents and Society

Alexander Fairbairn-Dixon

Exploring the interaction of accents, age, class and gender.

We’ll be answering some of the following questions:
Why is Estuary English the most widespread accent in the South of Britain?
What is happening when we say we ‘picked up’ an accent?
Why did a distinguished American academic ask shop assistants for the location of the women’s shoes in New York department stores?
For what reasons were the young women of Clonard a vanguard for changes in accent in Belfast?
Why was Milton Keynes used as a test case for why teenagers started to use the accents of their peer group instead of their parents?
Why did a British linguist do her research wearing a motorcycle jacket?
For what reasons do the lower middle classes overproduce prestige pronunciations?
Are men and women in a tug-of-war in their attitudes to using prestigious and stigmatised accents?
This and so much more…
