Shakespeare can be daunting even for the most seasoned of actors. In this short course we'll explore simple ways to approach the text, the significance of the verse and the broad range of characters within Shakespeare's stories. We'll also ask what it is that makes them so universal and still so relevant today.

During the course we’ll look at some of Shakespeare’s most famous plays: Much Ado About Nothing, King Lear, Macbeth, Twelfth Night and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  In the second two weeks of the course you’ll get the chance to work with monologues and duologues from other plays of your choice.

You’ll walk away from the course with enthusiasm for Shakespeare’s plays, techniques to identify clues and meaning within the texts and learn tools to bring the work to life.

Week 1

  • Getting to know you warm up exercise: physicality, using the space and rhythm
  • Short intro to the history of Shakespeare (and why it's important today), plus a discussion of the things that might be daunting when approaching his works
  • Iambic exercises - to help familiarise you with iambic pentameter, the rhythm of much of Shakespeare’s verse
  • Exploring language
  • Duologues - exercises to do with rhythm and focus

Week 2

  • A discuss about epic theatre and the relevance of the stories
  • Exercises on Soliloquies in Shakespearian theatre
  • Exploring and understanding imagery - why is it there?
  • Duologues workshop

Week 3

  • Playing with the text - various exercises
  • Status games
  • Selecting a monologue

Week 4

  • Working through your chosen monologue
  • Techniques to approach it as a normal text
